Annual Report for the year 2000-2001

I present before you the Jubilee Report the 51st Annual Report of our Association for the year 2000-2001. 50 years in a man's life and that of an organisation ia an unique landmark and to complete it gracefully is a great moment of life. As in Cricketing parlance, you concentrate more on reaching fifty, let's take fresh guard and concentrate hard and reach the magic landmark of a century smoothly and in style. At this glorious juncture, I Salute the cricketers who have played for the State at verious levels and office bearers who have nurtured the association by proper governance and administration. Cricket today is not just a mere game played for pleasure but has become a symbol of national pride.

The year under review was a hectic one both on and off the field. The activities of the year began immediately after the Annual General Body meeting.

It is a great honour for our association to have Sri SK Nair elected as the Finance Committee Chairman of the BCCI for the third year in succession and our President Sri A Salim being a member of the Junior Cricket Committee of the BCCI.

In the Cricketing arena the performance of the State teams at various levels was disappointing but there were sparkles of individual brilliance which gives us a clear ray of hope for the future.T Yohannan, S Nair, NK Aneesh and R Prem were selected to various South Zone teams. But it was a great disappointment that none of them could find a place in the playing eleven. The oft repeated discrimination of our plyers has been a stumbling block and one hopes that this will be remedied in the near future.

RV Gomez, MM Nathani and S Santh were selected to the Zonal Coaching Academy (South Zone) and R Prem and Rihas Jerin were selected to the CCI (Centre of Excellence) 2001 camp held at Mumbai.

We were able to find a sponsor for our State teams this year. The Magnanmity of Soccer International, Jullender, a leading sports goods exporter in India, has to be appreciated as they were kind enough to sponsor the Cricket apparel for all our State teams.

    Meetings

The Annual General Body meeting was held on 25th June 2000 at Hotel White Fort, Ernakulam. There were four Central Council meetings during the year. They were held as follows

    1. 16:07:2000 Abad Plaza, Ernakulam
    2. 07:01:2001 Abad Plaza, Ernakulam
    3. 04:04:2001 Windsor Castle, Kottayam
    4. 20:05:2001 Hotel Horizon, Trivandrum

The discussions held during these meetings were fruitful and purposeful. The active participation of the members contributed a great deal for the successful conduct of the activities during the year. The various Sub Committees met as and when necessary and played an important role in the promotion of the game in the state.

    Ranji Trophy

Keral began their Ranji campaign with the two away matches at Andhra and Hyderabad. Kerala got five points against Andhra but lost outright to Hyderabad. The remaining matches were played at Nehru Stadium, Ernakulam. Our inability to get an outright victory against Goa cost us dearly. The highlight of this yers Ranji performances was our outright victory against the star studded Karnataka. The last match against Tamil Nadu ended in draw and we had to content with the forth position in the South Zone league. T Yohannan took 19 wickwts from 5 matches while S Oasis, NA Kudua and M Suresh Kumar scored a century apiece. T Yohannan was selected to the South Zone team for the Duleep Trophy tournament. In the One Day format the team could muster only two victories which were against Andhra and Goa. S Nair was selected to the South Zone team for the Deodhar Trophy tournament.

    Under 25

Kerala were the holders of the Tournament (Coca Cola Cup) having defeated Tamil Nadu in the finals last year. This year Tamil Nadu, Karala and Hyderabad were pitted against each other in one pool and Kerala drew both it's matches. All the three teams in the pool got equal points and Kerala failed to qualify for the finals on applying the quotient rule. C Sanju scored a century and P Chandran took 10 wickets from 2 matches.

    Under 22

Kerala stood 4th in the South Zone table securing 17 points from 5 matches. The performance was disappointing as we could get 1st innings lead against Goa only. Centuries by V Girilal and CM Deepak, S Mathen's feat of 22 wickets from 5 matches were the notable performances from the team.

    Under - 19

The teams performance was disappointing. The team was tied with Goa for the Wooden Spoon in the South Zone league. This performance should be our main worry and concerted effort has to be made for the improvement in the standard of the game at this level. NK Aneesh was the lone performer by claiming 14 wickets from 5 matches. He was selected to the South Zone Team for the Cooch Dehar Trophy and also in the South Zone team that played against the visiting England Under 19 team.

    Under -16

The team was placed 4th in the Sout Zone league Championship. There was some encouraging individual performances in this category. R Prem scored a century while there were useful contribution with the bat from NJ John, CM Tejas, RV Gomez and Vineeth, P Prasanth, S Aneesh and R Jerin bowled consistently well in all matches. Over all the performance in this category gives us a ray of hope for better performance in the future. R Orem was selected to the South Zone team.

    Under - 14

The team was placed 4th in the South Zone league championship. There were some outstanding individual performances from R Prem (2 Centuries), R Fernandas (1 Century), Harikumar, M Sajith, RN Sooraj and MP Manu. R Prem's absence in the last two matches (He was selected to the state Under 16 team) affected the teams's performance considerably. Considering the individual performance in the Under 14 and Under 16 Category it looks likes a band of Young Turks are emerging who could surely hold the flag of Kerala Cricket high in the near future.

    KSCA Diamond Jubilee Tournament

Kerala team which was selected for 3 day matches had to play One Day matches as the tournament was rescheduled at the last moment. We lost our first match to BPL Sports Club, Bangalore by 39 runs in a low scoring match.

    MRF Buchi Babu Tournament

Our team lost it's first match in the tournament to Jolly Rovers Cricket Club, Chennai in the rain affected match. V Girilal PC Menon, B Ramprakash and KN Ananthapadmanabhan batted well for Kerala. Rain forced abandonment of the match and Jolly Rovers were declared winners on net run rate.

    MAS Cup 2001 (Under - 17)

The team played 5 matches and won 3 of them. The team failed to qualify for the finals as it secured 3rd place in the round robin league. Anoop was adjudged the best bowler in the tournament and our team was declared as the most disciplined team of the tournament. This tournament provided a good exposure for the Juniors.

Fine Star Trophy (Underder - 17)

The team did well to win all its five matches in the round robin league and qualified for the finals. In the finals they lost to Kannayya Cricket Academy, Chennai. R Fernandez played very well in the tournament which included a 175 not out. KT Jaseem, PR Rahul and MP Manu played consistently. R Fernandaz was adjudged the player of the tournament and MP Manu was awarded the best bowler prize.

List of KCA Members On Future

The financial position of the association is improving thanks mainly to the subvention amount being released by the BCCI. I would like to express our gratitude to the BCCI for their valuable financial assistance for the improvement of infrastructure in our state. Before I conclude let me draw your attention to last yeras report where in I had mentioned of a long cherished dream of a ground for the conduct of our domestic activities. That drem will materialise soon as negotiations with the Kerala agricultural University authorities for their ground at Panangad is almost over and I am glad to inform you that a long term agreement with the Kerala Agricultural University will facilitate us for all our domestic activities.

It is hearting to note that Quilon DCA has got sanction to develop 5 acres of land at Ashram Maidan and Kerala Cricket Association shall be developing it into an exclusive ground for cricket. It should be our endeavour to see that playing facilities are available in every district. We have to have a professional approch and the need of the day therefore is positive attitude and a clear vision for the future.
